Breakfast can be a slice of Bermuda Banana Bread



Bermuda Banana Bread is  a local favorite.  I can remember growing up and smelling the scent of fresh banana bread fill the air.  It is made with over ripe local bananas. This is because at this stage the banana, when mashed, releases natural sugars that are high in flavor. Bermuda bananas are typically much smaller than other brands, such as Chiquita, which are imported into the island. There are hundreds of banana patches growing around the island.  It is not uncommon to find locals growing banana trees in their backyard!  The best place to obtain local bananas is from the farmer's market or a vegetable stand dotted throughout the island.  You will not be able to purchase them from local grocery stores.  

Is banana bread easy to make?

Bermuda banana bread is extremely easy to make.  The recipe below is quite basic however you can get creative by adding nuts to your batter or try different spices.  But I like it fairly plain and moist.  

There are so many benefits to eating bananas, whether it be raw, baked or even fried!  They lower blood pressure.  People who suffer from high blood pressure and are encouraged to consume more potassium.  bananas are an excellent source of potassium.  They can be a pre work out snack as they boost energy levels and help to control body weight.  Old Bermudians say eating a banana can help soothe the stomach, helps with digestion and aids in hangover relief.  Best of all eating them regularly helps to improve skin health and acts as an anti aging agent.   

What are the ingredients?

  • 2 cups of mashed Bermuda Bananas
  • 4 cups of flour
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • 1 tsp of baking soda
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract


How do you make Bermuda banana bread?

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Next grease two loaf pans with crisco. Set the pans aside. 
  2. Peal and mash 15-20 local bananas and place into Kitchen Aid mixing bowl. Then add sugar and oil. Blend together. 
  3. In a separate glass bowl combine flour, baking powder and baking soda together. Slowly add the flour mixture to the banana mixture while blending with mixer. Add the eggs and vanilla extract. 
  4. When batter has reached a smooth consistency pour into the two greased loaf pans to equal heights. Place in oven for an hour.
  5. Remove pans from oven and leave to cool.  Once breads have cooled dump out the loaves on wax paper and serve.
