Mussel pie is a favourite among local residents. Mussels are in bountiful supply in local waters and can even be purchases from local fishermen roadside. Any restaurant that has a menu full of traditional Bermuda dishes you will find some sort of mussel dish on their menu.

Popular ways to eat this suck rock from the ocean is in a stew, pie or steamed in a light curry or tomato sauce. Some salads you include fresh Bermuda mussels along with other fresh ingredients from the ocean. Below is a simple recipe that can be made at home for a hearty lunch or dinner option:

Ingredients:

  • 1 quart of mussels
  • 2-3 potatoes
  • 3 stalks of celery
  • 2 medium Bermuda onions
  • ½ pound of bacon
  • 1 tsp of vinegar
  • 1 tsp of curry

Method:

Remove the shell from your Bermuda mussels steam and cut the mussels roughly.

Place your cut Bermuda mussels in a pot with 1 cup of water and allow to simmer until tender. This can take up to 45 minutes or more.

Cut up your onions, bacon, celery, potatoes into medium chunks. Fry the mixture then stew including the mussels, potatoes, thyme, salt, pepper and curry.

Line your baking dish with pasty. Add the stewed mixture and cover with more pastry.

Place in preheated oven of 350° until pasty is golden brown.
