Green Split Pea Soup, Warm Your Soul

Green split pea soup is great way to use up all the extra ham from Christmas dinner. Not only great during the holidays but any time of the year. Most restaurants on the island will serve this consistently on a particular day during the week. It will be their soup of the day, normally served with a warm bread roll.


1 pkg green split peas

1 Ham bone

2 carrots

2 onions

2 celerey stalks

2 garlic cloves

10 cups of chicken broth

4 cloves

2 sprigs of thyme

black pepper



Dice carrots. Chop onions, parsley, celery and garlic cloves. Be sure to wash and sort peas taking careful attention to remove anything that is unwanted in your soup. Bring the chicken broth and ham bone to a boil. Next add the sorted peas. Reduce heat and allow to simmer for approximately 20 minutes. Add all remaining ingredients to pot. Continue to allow the soup to simmer for another 60 minutes. Sometimes your soup can come out too thick. Should this happen simply add more chicken broth or water to your soup until the desired consistency is reached. Take note to frequently stir the pot to avoid any burning of the soup that could take place.

Serve warm with a whole wheat bread roll.
