Named after a prominent political figure

It is named after a prominent political figure bearing the same name.  The facility was originally built during 1941-1943.  Then the airport was a joint venture between US Army Air Forces and Royal Air Force base named Kindley Field.  Until 1970 Kindley Field was operated solely by US Air Force.  Then it was transferred to United States Navy.  The US Navy operated it as a US Naval Air station until 1995 until it was transferred over to the Bermuda Government.

Recently upgraded to new international standards

In recent years the airport has gone under several renovation projects which have brought the airport up to international standards.  Some modern features include self service kiosks for check in, customs duty payment, implementation of ATM's, offering restaurants, duty free shops among other upgrades.
